The "Bali Conference" as it is known, was launched 34 years ago back in 1987 at the Sanur Beach Hotel by local Darwin criminal practitioners.  Before you could say "not guilty" the concept had taken on a national flavour.

The Bali Conference now has the reputation of being Australia's premier criminal legal conference and attracts delegates from all jurisdictions in Australia and from overseas.

Mourning the loss of my dear friend, "big sister" and business partner.  Having organised the previous five CLANT conferences together, Lyn, you are here with me in spirit for the 18th conference in 2022!

The 2022 CLANT conference coincides with both a global pandemic that has seen an immediate reimagining around the practice and procedures of criminal law both home and abroad; and importantly, it also coincides with the 31st Anniversary of the final report of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody.

It took about 30 days for the pandemic to create real change in the processes surrounding the manner we practice criminal law, yet in 31 years we have seen little change or any meaningful improvement in access to justice for First Nations people. This conference looks to focus on what we can do to improve the criminal justice system, starting by looking in our own backyard.
